Can Dogs Eat Boursin Cheese?

March 3, 2020 by Jason Jensen

Even though it is safe for dogs to eat small amounts of several types of cheeses, Boursin cheese is not one of them. Boursin makes a wide variety of flavored cheeses, none of which are suitable for dogs. Continue reading to find out more about why Boursin cheese is bad for dogs, and what to do if your dog accidentally consumes some…

Can dogs eat Boursin cheese?

Why Boursin Cheese Is Bad for Dogs

At the time of writing this, Boursin makes six flavors of cheese: Garlic and Herbs, Shallot and Chive, Basil and Chive, Cracked Black Pepper, Red Chili Pepper, and Cranberry and Spice. Unfortunately, all of these flavors contain ingredients that are bad for dogs.

Alliums

Most of Boursin’s cheeses contain members of the allium family, including garlic, onion, chives, and shallots. Alliums are toxic to dogs, with garlic being the most potent.

Pepper

Four of the six varieties of Boursin cheese contain either black pepper, white pepper, or red chili pepper. All of these peppers contain capsaicin, the chemical that makes peppers hot, which is harmful to dogs. It can cause canines to experience extreme discomfort and inflammation.

Salt and Fat

All of Boursin’s cheeses are high in sodium and fat. While it is unlikely the salt and fat in Boursin cheese would do any serious harm to your pet, it is nevertheless unhealthy for them. That said, excessive salt consumption can lead to bloat, which is potentially fatal for canines.

What to Do if Your Dog Has Eaten Boursin Cheese

If you dog eats a small amount of Boursin cheese, they are likely to be just fine. However, if they eat a large amount – many spoonfuls or a whole container – be on the lookout for signs of toxicity.

These are the symptoms to watch for:

  • Lethargy
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Rapid breathing
  • Pale gums and mucus
  • Dehydration/excessive water consumption
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

If you dog is exhibiting these symptoms, you should take them to a vet immediately.

Alternatives to Boursin Cheese Safe for Dogs to Eat

If you’d like to give your dog a cheesy treat that won’t make them sick, try giving them a small amount of any of the following:

  • Cottage cheese
  • Mozzarella
  • Cheddar
  • Colby
  • Swiss
  • Monterey Jack
