If you’ve recently considered purchasing an Azawakh, you’re probably still suffering from sticker shock. On average, an Azawakh costs upwards of $3,000. But why is this dog so expensive?
The simple answer for why Azawakhs are so expensive is because they are a rare breed with unique features and characteristics, that is highly sought after. Continue reading to get the full story behind why these dogs cost so much…

Azawakhs Are Rare
The Azawakh is an uncommon breed, and anything that is rare tends to cost more. Most people have probably never seen or heard of one. In fact, they are so uncommon, that when someone sees one for the first time, they typically think there is something wrong with the dog because of its unusually tall and skinny appearance.
Azawakhs Look Unique
There is no other dog that looks quite like an Azawakh. They peculiarly lanky, bony, and sinewy, despite being well muscled. Even the best fed Azawakh has visible bones do to how their bodies carry muscle.
This makes many buyers willing to pay a premium because they want a dog they deem as special and unlike anyone else’s dog.
Azawakhs Are Fast (Really, Really, Fast)

Azawakhs are one of the fastest dog breeds in the world, topping out at 40 mph. While this isn’t likely to have any practical benefit for most owners, many find it impressive, nonetheless.
Azawakhs Are Skilled Hunters
The Azawakh is an excellent sighthound hunting breed. They hunt everything from hares to antelopes to wild boars. An avid hunter interested in buying one might consider them a worthwhile investment for this reason.
Azawakhs Are Loyal Protectors
The Azawakh is a natural guard dog who will instinctually protect people, property, and other animals, such as livestock. Standing between 25″ to 29″ in height and weighing up to 55 lb, they are large enough to be formidable against most intruders, especially in packs.
Azawakhs Are Highly Intelligent
The Azawakh is a very smart breed, which means they are easy to train. However, they are also fiercely independent, so if you plan on training one to obey your every command, you better start at an early age.
Regardless of the training regimen you have in mind for your dog, smart breeds are usually valued higher than their less intelligent counterparts.
Should You Buy One?
Now that you know why Azawakhs are so expensive, the next logical question is: Should you buy one? Only you can decide that, but I always recommend adopting a dog from a shelter over buying one from a breeder.
There are countless dogs in shelters all across the country that are in desperate need of a good home, and they don’t cost anything. Also, if you are concerned about adopting a mixed breed – what you’re most likely to find at a shelter – I encourage you to read this article about why mixed breeds are better.
